WHY IS BOTSWANA SAFARI WORTH THE PRICE?

First of all, why is Botswana safari so expensive? The answer to that is that it is an exclusive safari destination with the government’s strong focus on low-impact tourism and strong conservation. This means that there is limited occupancy per lodge, hence making the safari experience more intimate for visitors hence the price.

In addition, Botswana boasts of iconic safari destinations like the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park and Makgadikgadi Pans. With that being said, Botswana is worth the price and there are affordable ways go on safari in Botswana.

The pricing for accommodation in Botswana luxury tented camp is priced per person pr night. The price varies depending on whether you are travelling during the low or peak season.

For instance, for this type of accommodation on the Okavango Delta in the Khwai private Reserve,  expect to pay USD 900 -USD 1900 during the peak season. Please note, these price does not include flights and visas. For up to date prices for when you book, have a look at Natural Selection website.

Botswana luxury safari lodges includes all meals, drinks, game drives, other activities like walking safari, boat cruise on this price. However, you might have to pay extra for certain activities like scenic helicopter ride and spa treatments.

Botswana group camping Safari

If you are visiting Botswana on a budget, consider a group camping safari. It is the cheapest out there. Expect to pay around USD 200-300 per night. For this price, you will share the available amenities with other campers. You will be sleeping in a sleeping bag. Additionally, the tents are smaller, but they serve the purpose. You might be expected to help pitch the tent.

Budget Camping Safari Botswana

Camping is by far one of the affordable Botswana safaris , and a great way to experience Botswana’s wilderness without breaking the bank; however, that requires planning, organisation, and a few bush skills, such as 4×4 safari vehicle driving. The good news is, Botswana camping safari tips are not that difficult to learn and implement.

For Botswana wild camping with self-catering, shared amenities, and proper facilities, expect to pay around USD 400 a night. Oh! Just to clarify, Although “Botswana wild camping” is a commonly used term, it doe not mean you can go into the wilderness and camp anywhere you like. You can only camp at designated camping areas.

Budget Mobile Safari Botswana

For budget-friendly mobile camping tents with safari-style accommodations and en-suite bathrooms, expect to pay around USD 450-600 per night. These comprise comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms with toilets, which is a significant safety advantage because you won’t have to go outside at night if you need to use the restroom. Additionally, you will have guides, porters and chefs. This type of accommodation can also be referred to as mid range mobile safari or “glamping”.

 2. BOTSWANA SAFARI PARK FEES

Affordable Botswana Safari

Botswana safari park fees vary from park to park, ranging from USD10 to USD 40. Chobe National Park being the most expensive at USD 40. Central Kalahari Game Reserve being the cheapest at UDS 10. Chobe National Park is famous, hence the difference in pricing compared to lesser known Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

3. BOTSWANA SAFARI BUDGET: EXTRA ACTIVITIES

Most companies in Botswana include accommodation, game drives, meals, and some activities in the price; however, certain activities you will have to pay extra for, for example, Scenic helicopter over the Okavango Delta will cost you an extra USD 300 for a 30-minute ride.

Spa treatments, and village cultural visits are usually not included in the costs.

4. BOTSWANA SAFARI TIPPNG

Although not mandatory, while doing your budget and  wondering how much to tip, the general tipping costs usually ranges from UDS 5 to USD 20. Most importantly, you can tip whatever your spirit tells you to. However much you tip will be greatly welcomed and appreciated.

To make it easy for staff to divide, I recommend you tip at the end of your stay. It  helps them if the y are going to divide the tips among themselves.

5. Souvenir Costs

Souvenir prices range from UDS 5 to UDS 30 depending on what you are buying. Wondering what to bring from Botswana? You will have wood carvings, pottery, weaving, art, and bushmen handcrafts.

WAYS TO DO BOTSWANA SAFARI ON A BUDGET

 Botswana self drive safari

Botswana safari packages

Think Botswana safaris are for people who fly in charter flights? Think again. A self-drive safari is an excellent way to experience the true beauty of the wilderness without incurring a significant expense.

Self-drive safari lets you experience the same wild magic with a lot more freedom, and perhaps dustier boots. A one week  Botswana safari itinerary will cost you a fraction of what you could have paid at a luxury safari lodge.

Travel during the shoulder season

Prices rise significantly during the peak season; I highly recommend you consider travelling from October to March. Although temperatures rise during these months and animal concentrations decline, you will still be able to have great sightings. Above all, the costs are much more affordable.

 Book packages

When booking your safari, ensure you go for Botswana safari packages. They are cheaper if bundled together, and remove the hassles of booking different things which can get quickly overwhelming. Luckily, Botswana Safari Company tours combines accommodation, all meals, game drives, park fee, certain activities in one price.

 Choose affordable accommodation

Instead of going for permanent luxury safari lodges and camps, look at other options like luxury mobile tented camps. They are a lot more affordable without compromising on comfort and safety.

Book directly with local tour company

Booking directly with Botswana local tour companies is by far cost-effective than booking with international tour agencies. They offer invaluable service in arranging your accommodation, transfers, domestic flights, and guides.

Additionally, they know all the best spots, itineraries and have a wealth of knowledge about  Botswana’s wilderness. The only thing they might not do for you is booking international flights. That being said, do your research on any tour company you decide to work with.

I do understand that for international travellers, international tour agencies are easy to book with and offer some form of protection; however, this comes with a huge markup and they usually do not have an in-depth knowledge compared to local tours.

Travel by road where possible

Your mode of transport between parks and camps will make a massive difference to your budget. Chartered flights are pricey. It is not unheard of to pay USD 150 during the peak season for a one-way ticket from one lodge to the other for a 15-minute flight. On the contrary, 4 x 4 vehicle driving is entirely doable and will be kind to your Botswana safari budget.

 Travel with friends/family

Solo travellers, let’s gather here and cry together because we pay more either way.  Although Botswana lodges and camps charge per person per night, if you are travelling alone, you will pay extra. I don’t know if it is all lodges. However, from personal experience, I paid a “single supplementary fee”, basically paying extra on the original price because I was a solo traveller. And that amount was an eye-watering 40% extra.

If possible, consider travelling with someone. Additionally, if you are travelling with someone or as a group, you can split costs among yourselves for things like safari vehicle hire and guide hire.

 Book early

Booking early comes with some discounts, especially when it comes to extra activities. As demand rises for these activities, so does the price. Furthermore, if you are staying longer, there will be extra discount in most safari camps and lodges.

Look for seasonal offers

Look for seasonal offers, this usually comes around during the low season. For example, if you book 6 night stay at Natural Selection  camps, you get 10% off in certain months.

Best Budget Safari Spots in Botswana

Visiting Botswana on a budget is feasible if you choose the correct location. Here is a list of the best spots for travellers on a tight budget.

  • Central Kalahari
  • Makgadikgadi Pans
  • Khwai Community Area
  • Moremi Game Reserve

BOTSWANA SAFARI DEALS

When planning your safari , go on a little deal hunting. Although these deals are not “in your face” type of advertisement, they are there.  You just have to dig a little deeper. Here are some of the deals running at the time of writing this post, Chobe lodges offers 3  night stay for a price of two. There are also specials running at Lelobu safaris with discounted packages.

Always check for deals before booking. Additionally, if you are a returning client for a certain company, check if you are eligible for a loyalty discount.
