How to get there
Travelling from Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, to Maun, the gateway to safari destinations, can be challenging for many due to the distance and the high cost of air travel in the country.
However, if planned carefully, it can become an adventure in itself. Here is everything you need to know to plan your trip smartly.
Gaborone to Maun Distance
The mode of transportation, air or road, influences the distance between the two places.
The distance from Gaborone to Maun by flight, measured in a straight line, is 577 km, whereas distance from Gaborone to Maun by road is much longer, about 855km.
Travel duration
Travelling from Gaborone to Maun by road will take around 10 hours, whereas by flight it will take only an hour. Obviously, if you can, taking the flight will be the best option. It is much more comfortable and will save you a lot of time.
Gaborone to Maun flights
There are direct flights available through Air Botswana, the leading provider of domestic flights. However, if direct flights are not available at the time of your booking, you can take a connecting flight via Airlink.
Once in Maun, there are flights to the Okavango Delta; however, these are only bush flights.
This fight will stop in Johannesburg, South Africa, before heading to Maun. You can book directly with the airlines or through Skyscanner.

Since Maun is a gateway to safaris, there are several routes to get there. You can travel from Gaborone via Ghanzi, which is another big town in Botswana.
First and foremost, what is Gaborone to Maun via Ghanzi distance? Drum roll, it is a whopping 950km to 100km. A very long distance indeed. However, it is a beautiful route that offers stunning views.
If you are travelling by road, the duration is around 12 hours. The most common route is through Kang.
I highly recommend that you take stops in Kang and Ghanzi. There are lovely places and accommodation, should you decide to stay overnight.
When driving, watch out for wild animals, cattle, and donkeys. The road conditions are reasonably good, although there will be some potholes in certain areas.
Gaborone to Maun via Serowe
Another way to get to Maun from Gaborone is via the beautiful town of Serowe. The distance from Gaborone to Maun via Serowe is approximately 860 km, with a driving duration of about 10 hours.
So you will be driving through Mahalapye, Palapye, Serowe, Letlhakane, Rakops and then Maun. If you want to travel via Letlhakane, the route will be the same.
Therefore, the distance between Gaborone and Maun via Letlhakane will still be 860 km. All of these are reasonably large towns, so you will not have any trouble with fuel stops and restocking.
The roads are tarred. Again, watch out for wild animals, especially between Rakops and Maun. Drive carefully at dusk, as that is when there is a lot of movement among wild animals and livestock.

We can all agree that flying is the best mode of transport because it avoids long hours of travel. Additionally, it’s a direct flight, hence no stopover. Also, as you approach Maun, you will get a beautiful aerial view of Maun.
Moreover, flying remains the quickest and easiest mode of transport from Maun to various safari destinations.
That said, given the cost of domestic flights in Botswana, this might not be possible for some people.
Even if you are travelling by road, there are certain things that you can do to make your journey more comfortable. On the flip side, travelling by road is long but scenic and more adventurous.
Tips and tricks for a comfortable journey
The following are some tips and tricks to help you have a much more comfortable journey, whether you are travelling from Gaborone to Okavango Delta or other routes.
1. Make sure to service your car before the journey; it is such a long journey, and the last thing you want is a breakdown. So, check the oils and tyres, and have a recovery kit with you. Additionally, make sure the car is in good condition and reliable. preferably a 4×4 vehicle.
2. Remember to fuel up at each stop; there are some areas where you will have a long stretch without a petrol station, especially between Gaborone and Mahalapye and between Makalamabedi and Maun. Please don’t wait until it’s too late.
3. Make sure the AC is working; it gets really hot. Also, take a water cooler with you and drink plenty of fluids. We do not want you to get dehydrated. Pack your food and make sure your phone is working, and have a power bank.
4. Look out for wild animals and livestock, especially if you are going to detour.
5. Always start the journey early to avoid the heat and arriving late at night
6. Avoid driving at night because of the risk of accidents due to roaming livestock and wild animals
7. If flying, book your flight well in advance to avoid having to take a connecting flight
