When to visit Moremi Game Reserve

If your goal is wildlife viewing, the best time to visit Moremi Game Reserve is during the dry season, as is the case with the Okavango Delta in general.

This is because Moremi Game Reserve is located within the Okavango Delta.

I suggest any time from May to September, as that is the peak for wildlife in the reserve. Additionally, the weather is pleasant, with all-day sunshine.

However, from August, temperatures start to creep up, but it’s still very excellent weather.

How to get to Moremi Game Reserve?

Moremi Game Reserve can be accessed by road or a small charter plane.

The logistics of getting there depend on your country of origin.

However, if you are travelling from the USA, the UK, Australia, or Europe, you are likely to connect in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Then, from South Africa, you will take a direct flight to Maun, Botswana, the gateway town to Botswana safaris.

Maun to Moremi Game Reserve

So, once you land in Maun, you will be closer to the reserve but not quite there yet. So from here you can either travel by road or take a bush plane.

The distance from Maun to Moremi Game Reserve is around 150 km. However, the distance will obviously depend on where you are staying in the reserve.

If you opt for the bush plane, it will take around 30 minutes. Moreover, most of the Moremi luxury lodges are accessible by flight.

On another note,  this route is well known to safari self-drivers, and Moremi has some of the best campsites.

How to get to Moremi Game Reserve by car?

If you travel by road, I highly recommend using a 4×4 safari vehicle, as the roads are bumpy and not tarred. Otherwise, you will have a hell of a time.

Travelling by road is a very doable option; you can expect the drive to take around 4 hours. Not too bad, right?

Moreover, the drive is much easier during the dry season.

Walking safaris

Want to experience the African bush on foot? To trek the land that Botswana’s apex predators roam? A walking safari is the activity for you.

This thrilling activity is popular in Botswana. I highly recommend you do it with expert guides.

Boat cruising

This is a classic safari activity in Moremi, particularly around Xakanaxa lagoon. The view is breathtaking, and it is overall a relaxing experience.

Mokoro safari

Aside from the boat cruise, there is also an option of going on an amokoro excursion, which is, by the way, a highly regarded activity.

What I can say is that if you are visiting and plan to go on a water-based safari, check with your safari operator because this activity is not available year-round. It is highly dependent on water levels.
