Furthermore, you will be glad to know that the road is fully tarred, so this will not be a rough journey.

Chobe National Park, your starting point!

If you are visiting Chobe National Park, you’ll end up in Kasane. If you combine it with Maun, well, you’ll be as close to the Okavango Delta as you can get, or you can pass through the Okavango Delta on your way to Maun.

The most adventurous route, loved by Botswana safari self-drivers, runs through Chobe and Savuti, all the way to the Okavango Delta.

This is a full-on itinerary with some spectacular landscapes and wildlife along the way. Not only that, if you want to stay in lodges, there are some incredible upscale safari lodges for you to choose from.

Additionally, you can opt for a fly-in safari.

Another option is to take a direct flight to Maun and begin your safari to the Okavango Delta. Once you are in Maun, there are multiple ways to reach the Okavango Delta. Be it guided drive, self-drive or flying.

Regarding flights to the Okavango Delta, these are only charter or bush flights, usually booked directly with the company.

Helpful travel tips

1. If you are self-driving, ensure you are experienced in driving a 4×4 safari vehicle, as the roads require some skill. The roads can be very muddy during the rainy season or have deep sand during the dry season.

2. If you are travelling by car in the summer, make sure the AC is working because it can get extremely hot.

3. If you are self-driving, I always recommend you start your journey early in the morning. This helps you avoid traffic and the scorching sun in Botswana.

4. Always plan in advance and thoroughly.

5. Travelling by flight? Book as early as possible because, as I mentioned, the direct flights are usually in the morning. Connecting flights will take ages.

6. If you can, avoid driving at night. There have been numerous accidents involving livestock and wild animals, usually at night.

8. If you are driving, be prepared. I mean recovery gear, maps, supplies and everything else in between, especially if you are travelling via Savuti.
